Dry Needling Treatment For You

If you’ve been living with muscle pain that stretching, rest, and time just won’t touch, dry needling treatment may be the piece your recovery has been missing. It’s a technique our licensed physical therapists use to release tight, irritable bands of muscle tissue, often called trigger points, that refer pain to other areas of the body and keep you from moving the way you want to.

The treatment is simple: a thin, sterile filament needle is inserted directly into the trigger point. There’s no medication involved as the needle itself is the tool. Many patients feel a brief twitch response as the muscle releases, followed by a noticeable drop in tightness and pain. Our clinicians tend to use electrical stimulation along with the dry needling to augment the response. Dry needling treatment is never a stand-alone fix here. It’s one part of a broader plan built around your evaluation, alongside manual therapy, corrective exercise, and the education you need to keep the pain from coming back.

Patients come to us for dry needling with neck and back pain, shoulder impingement, tennis elbow, hip tightness, IT band issues, plantar fasciitis, headaches, and stubborn overuse injuries from work or sport. If you’re wondering if our dry needling treatment is right for you, click below!

Dry Needling Vs. Acupuncture

Dry needling vs acupuncture; practices that look the same, but the difference lies underneath. At Lancaster Physical Therapy, dry needling is one of our specialties which is why it’s important to know the difference.

Acupuncture comes from traditional Chinese medicine and works along meridians, with needle placement intended to restore the flow of energy throughout the body. It’s typically used to address a wide range of conditions, from digestion to stress.

Dry needling, however, comes out of Western medicine and modern musculoskeletal science. Placement is based on anatomy; your therapist targets a specific muscle, at a specific depth, because the physical exam identifies that muscle as the source of your symptoms. The goal is mechanical and neuromuscular: release the trigger point, restore normal muscle length, and improve how the joint moves.

Dry Needling Benefits

At Lancaster Physical Therapy, we believe there are an abundance of dry needling benefits. Read below for a list of popular benefits that come with dry needling therapy.

Fast relief from muscle tension. Trigger points often release within a single session, and patients frequently notice the change before they leave the table.

Better range of motion. Releasing a tight muscle lets the joint it crosses move freely again.

Reduced pain, including referred pain. Trigger points send pain to places you wouldn’t expect; a shoulder point causing arm pain, a hip point causing knee pain. Treating the source often quiets symptoms downstream.

Improved circulation to the tissue. The needle prompts a local response that brings blood flow to an area that’s been starved of it.

Faster progress in the rest of your therapy. A muscle that isn’t guarding can finally be strengthened and retrained. Dry needling opens the door for the exercise work that makes results last.

Drug-free and minimally invasive. No injections, no prescriptions, no downtime beyond some short-term soreness.

Works alongside your existing plan. It layers into manual therapy and exercise rather than replacing them.
